Mike Vrabel Moves Past Controversy and the Patriots Are Following His Lead
His off-field issues of the offseason are behind coach Mike Vrabel. At least that was the tone he set for the spring in the New England Patriots' fold.
As a player, Vrabel thrived with a "Marine Corps" type attitude when facing adversity – adapt, improvise and overcome.
Resilience is Vrabel's calling card
When he wasn't getting the shot in Pittsburgh, he took the gamble with the Patriots. Three Super Bowls and a Pro Bowl later that proved to work out best.
It translated into his coaching career. When he and ownership in Tennessee couldn't get on the same page with player personnel, he was sent packing. Instead of leaping right back in, he waited – taking on a consulting role and trying to strengthen some of his weaknesses working with the offensive line in Cleveland – and found the opportunity he desired in New England.
The Patriots went from 4-13 under Jerod Mayo in 2024 to 13-4 and a Super Bowl run with Vrabel at the helm.
Coach still putting team first
This offseason, Vrabel's personal life could have derailed things when evidence of an extra-marital relationship with reporter Dianna Russini surfaced.
It caused Vrabel and the franchise discomfort and embarrassment. He even stepped away from Day 3 of the NFL Draft. But Vrabel returned instantly and has relied on his powerful personality to turn the corner.
"We all have to deal with things outside of here," said Vrabel. "My focus, and obviously the excitement I have for coaching is what is most important right now."
One thing you can be certain. The players remain in Vrabel's corner. He has lost no credibility with the most important pieces of this building franchise.
"Just to be a part of the team where everybody expects excellence … I'm just feeling really lucky to be a part of that," said one of the newest Patriots, former New York Jet Alijah Vera-Tucker. "All that is being led by good coaching in Vrabel."
This spring's workouts and mini-camp picked up right when the team left off, and Vrabel and his staff have pointed their crew in the right direction, now just four weeks away from the opening of training camp.
"The guys have worked. We've had great leadership, added some great leaders," said Vrabel. "We're continuing to build and hopefully prepare for a long journey."
