Report: Dallas Mavericks go to college ranks for their next coach

The Dallas Mavericks have decided to hire Michigan coach Dusty May as its next head coach, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

May led the Wolverines to the NCAA title in April and has a 64-13 record in two seasons. Before joining Michigan, May led Florida Atlantic to a 126-69 record from 2018 to 2024, including the Owls’ first Final Four appearance in 2023.

May will take over the Mavs as the team prepares for the second season with young superstar Coper Flagg, the reining NBA Rookie of the Year.

The move is the first head coaching hire in the tenure of team president Masai Ujiri, after he and former head coach Jason Kidd mutually agreed to part ways.

May will need to hit the ground running with the NBA Draft taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday and the Mavs owning the No. 9 pick.
