Ernie Clement News Emerges After Removal From Blue Jays Lineup

Ernie Clement has continued to deliver for the Toronto Blue Jays, now in his fourth season with the organization. Clement has been a major reason the Blue Jays have remained a competitive team once again this year despite all the injuries.

They sit at 37-38 entering Saturday, but it could be a lot worse if not for Clement. The 30-year-old veteran has posted a .294 batting average, .313 on-base percentage, .756 OPS, seven home runs and 28 RBIs across 74 games. He leads the American League with 20 doubles.

Clement is also one of the best defensive infielders in baseball. He is well on his way toward earning his first career All-Star selection, currently leading all American League second basemen on the ballot.

However, Clement is now battling an injury. Ahead of Friday's series opener against the Chicago Cubs, he was removed from the lineup. Instead, Davis Schneider drew the start at second base, hitting eighth.

Given that Clement had missed just one game all season, it was unexpected to not see him out there. Ahead of first pitch, an update from Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet confirmed Clement is dealing with an injury setback.

"Ernie Clement's battling some left hip soreness; Blue Jays have been looking to get him a day off on current 16-games-in-16-days stretch," Zwelling wrote on X.

Fortunately, the way Zwelling described the injury makes it sound more like a day-to-day situation rather than an issue that will require a stint on the injured list.

It is unknown when Clement originally suffered the injury or if the discomfort built up over time. It is also unclear if he will be available off the bench for Toronto as they look to capture their fourth consecutive win. His next chance to return will come Saturday in game two against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
