FCA golf event gives Permian Basin seniors one final high school match
This week, some of the best graduated high school golfers came together, had fun and didn't worry so much about their final score.
The third annual event put on by the Permian Basin chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, was held at Midland Country Club over three days and culminated on Friday. Six schools were represented and players were divided between the Blue Team and White Team competing in match play, like what is played at the Ryder Cup.
Blue Team ended up winning, 7-5.
The event not only gave these golfers a chance to compete one last time at the high school level, but it gave them time to bond as golfers and with their faith.
"It's been a fun camp. I definitely gained in my faith to Jesus, for sure," said Midland High graduate Carter Tipton, who was playing for the Blue Team. "I played great the last two days. Thursday, me and Sloane (Livingston) from Andrews shot 64. And (Friday), me and (Midland High's Cady Papasan) shot 63. It was a great two days of golf for me. I had a blast."
Tipton said it was different getting to play with different people but it was a fun experience.
"Being out here on my home course and then playing match play, which I don't play very often, it was a fun time," he said.
The event gave three members of the Andrews girls golf team - Livingston, Ballou and Nichole Thomas-Subia - an opportunity to play one last time together. In May, they helped the Lady Mustangs capture their fourth straight Class 4A state title and 21st state championship in program history.
"It was nice to play with them all again," said Livingston about playing with her AHS teammates one last time. "It can be hard going our separate ways and I feel it's nice to end on something fun and on a high note coming off state. I thought it was open."
Livingston and Ballou, who both played for the White Team, said it was nice to get on the course again after taking a break from golf at the conclusion of the state tournament.
"It's probably the last time in something organized," Ballou said. "I thought it was really fun and I think it was a good way to end my golf career.
"I wasn't sure how I was going to do because I had not played golf in a while since high school golf ended. It ended up being really good and I had a lot of fun."
Livingston said she enjoyed her time at the event as well even though she was a little rusty too.
"It was really fun," she said. "It was nice to come out here and play with some people I've grown up with and one last time before we all go to college.
"I think I did pretty good. I didn't have the highest expectations coming in since I hadn't played in a while, but I really psyched myself when I came out here and I think I did a lot better than I think I was going to."
The golfers who participated always seem to enjoy their time in this event and would encourage other graduates in the future to participate.
"It's a great tournament, a lot of run and it's Christian-based, which is probably the best part about it," Livingston said. "I feel it helps a lot of us to get more in touch with our faith through this and bring something fun to golfers too."
Added Tipton, "I had some friends play in it last year and they said they loved it. I thought I might as well try it out and I had a blast. I'm glad I did it."
