Alex Rodriguez Urges Yankees to Target World Series-Winning Shortstop
The New York Yankees are expected to be buyers at this year's MLB trade deadline. At 39-26, they're trending toward a third straight postseason appearance and are seven games ahead in the wild-card race.
However, their lineup has several weaknesses, including at shortstop. Jose Caballero (44 starts) and Anthony Volpe (17 starts) have spent the majority of the time at the position. However, each has struggled offensively, with both having a sub .700 OPS through the team's first 65 games.
During an appearance on FS1's "First Things First," MLB legend Alex Rodriguez suggested Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena as an ideal trade target for the Yankees.
"I like a guy like Jeremy Pena, the shortstop," Rodriguez said. "Went to University of Maine, who's a world champion, a Gold Glove winner, and an A+ individual character just like Aaron Judge, only 27, 28 years old. That's exactly what I think I would do if I was the Yankees."
Pena has already carved out an impressive career since making his MLB debut in 2022. He was named the World Series MVP as a rookie and has earned one Gold Glove Award and one All-Star nod.
This season, he has appeared in 30 games for the Astros, accumulating 118 at-bats, 23 runs scored, 34 hits, three home runs, 12 RBIs and five stolen bases. He is also slashing .288/.356/.424 with a .780 OPS.
Along with strong production, the 28-year-old's team control makes him an intriguing target. He has one more year of arbitration and is not set to become a free agent until the 2028 season.
Rodriguez's suggestion reflects his belief that the Yankees need a proven veteran to help anchor their infield. Pena's track record and proven success make him a realistic option for New York.
