Seguin hires Jay's Gary Gutierrez as next athletic director and football coach

Gary Gutierrez was approved to be Seguin's next athletic director and football coach during a special meeting called by the school district on Tuesday.

He replaces Craig Dailey, who stepped down following the 2025 season after coaching his alma mater for the last five years.

Gutierrez coached Jay for the last 13 seasons, leading the Mustangs to playoffs the last three seasons, including a school-record playoff run to the regional semifinals in 2023 with a 10-3 mark. The Mustangs went 9-2 and won the District 14-5A-I championship last season.

Prior to taking over the Jay program in 2013, Gutierrez also headed programs at Houston Sharpstown (2006-08) and Levelland (2009-12).

Gutierrez heads back to Seguin, where he was the offensive coordinator from 2003 to 2006. He inherits a program that went 5-5 in 2025. Seguin is aligned in District 13-5A-I, along with two-time reigning state champion Smithson Valley.
