Red Sox Shortstop Trevor Story Undergoes Surgery
After much deliberation, Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story has made the decision to undergo surgery to repair a sports hernia.
As first reported by Tim Healey of the Boston Globe, Story's surgery comes after nearly a week of visiting various doctors and will keep him out for 6-to-10 weeks. The 33-year-old was originally placed on the 10-day IL on May 16th, but it was revealed that he had been dealing with the injury since spring training.

It had not been a good season for Story, who was slashing .206/.244/.303 with three homers and 19 RBI along with six errors and -1 defensive runs saved before shutting things down. Story did not want to use the injury as an excuse for his performance but did attribute some of his struggles to the nagging pain in his groin, saying he wasn't "able to really move like [himself]."
Boston recalled infielder Nick Sogard last Saturday to replace Story on the roster, but the immediate question became whether they would consider moving second baseman Marcelo Mayer to his natural position of shortstop in his stead.
Manager Chad Tracy's immediate response has been to rotate Andruw Monasterio, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Sogard at the position, but he indicated that if Story were to need surgery and miss a big chunk of time, Mayer could be in play there.
Earlier this week, Mayer began taking grounders at shortstop for the first time all season. He also appeared very eager when asked about the opportunity, saying that shortstop is "home" to him. Now with a decision on Story, it will be interesting to see how Tracy chooses to manage the crucial infield spot moving forward.

With the aforementioned utility options, it could be some time before the Red Sox transition to using Mayer as a full-time shortstop. But Story's surgery clearly opens the door for such a move, especially considering Tracy's close relationship with the young infielder from their time together in the minor leagues.
Boston will host the Minnesota Twins for a three-game set beginning Friday night. They will face left-hander Connor Prielipp, making it even more unlikely that we see Mayer in the lineup right away.
