Three takeaways from TCU’s baseball series against West Virginia

TCU was seeking to pick up a crucial win in their final series of the season against Big 12 foe West Virginia.

The Horned Frogs did so on Friday with a 4-0 win in Morgantown, West Virginia.

It was the second game of a three-game series. WVU beat TCU 2-0 on Thursday.

Here are three takeaways from Friday’s game.

Second-inning slugfest

Preston Gamster had two hits in Thursday’s game versus the Mountaineers. Gamster helped the Horned Frogs strike first in Friday’s matchup with a solo home run in the second inning. The homer was the first yielded in the past five starts for WVU starting pitcher Maxx Yehl.

After Yehl struck out TCU’s Brady Dallimore, Kyuss Gargett got in on the action and hit a 415-foot solo homer to center field for the Horned Frogs second run of the game and only the fourth home run given up by Yehl this season.

TCU head coach Kirk Saarloos, talked on the ESPN+ broadcast during the game.

“It’s really hard to do against this guy (Yehl). He doesn’t give up many home runs, but when you’re not scoring a lot, then you can do it with one swing, that makes things a lot easier,” said Saarloos.

Did Lance Davis maintain his recent dominance?

After the first complete game shutout of Lance Davis’ college career, how was his follow-up performance for TCU?

In Davis’ first two innings on Friday, it was replay of his performance against the Utah Utes in the previous series. Davis needed only 16 pitches through the first two innings in stymying the Mountaineers on Friday.

Saarloos talked about what he saw early from his starting pitcher.

“He’s gotten a little bit better as the year’s gone on. This is, you know, his redshirt freshman year. He didn’t pitch at all last year, and you know, just proud of the way he’s developed, and kind of got a little bit better each week,” said Saarloos.

WVU got their first opportunity of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the third inning with men on first and second with two outs. But Davis struck out Gavin Kelly on a full count and escaped the inning with no damage.

That was the Mountaineers’ only inning with a runner in scoring position as Davis pitched his second straight complete-game shutout.

He surrendered only three hits and struck out six.

Big 12 standings

TCU is in a fight for fifth place in the Big 12 with Oklahoma State and Cincinnati.
