Bulls' Bryson Graham Raiding Magic Front Office With Massive Early Hire

Bryson Graham is the new executive vice president of basketball operations for the Chicago Bulls, and he’s wasting no time getting his ducks in a row for the franchise.

On Thursday, May 14, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Graham is hiring the Orlando Magic’s right-hand man and bringing him to the Windy City.

“The Chicago Bulls are finalizing a deal to hire Orlando Magic assistant GM Stephen Mervis as Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations under new EVP Bryson Graham, sources tell ESPN,” Charania stated in a post on X.

The Bulls, according to Charania, will also hire Brooklyn Nets executive Acie Law as Vice President of Player Personnel.

What Does Stephen Mervis Bring to the Bulls?

Graham already seems to be good luck for the Bulls. After this hire, they drew the No. 4 pick in the NBA draft lottery, defying the odds, and the team also has the biggest cap space in the NBA going into the new season.

Now, Graham has reportedly secured this Mervis hire. According to K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Sports Network, Mervis was a quick “prominent target” for the Bulls’ front office after Graham came on the scene.

Mervis coming to the Bulls is significant. He brings a long history with the Magic, having spent 12 years there, including time as VP of Basketball Strategy and Evaluation. Mervis handled plenty of the meat-and-potatoes operations of the team, including salary cap management, collective bargaining and strategic planning. Before heading to Orlando, Mervis worked for the Indiana Pacers.

So, Mervis brings experience, and not just a little, to the Bulls. He also brings a fresh attitude and, what’s really important, practical skills. If he was on Graham’s radar from the start, then that says something, and it’s a reason for Bulls fans to celebrate.
