San Antonio area athletes to watch at the UIL state track and field championships
May 13-The UIL state track and field championship begin Thursday at Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus. Class 3A and 4A compete on Thursday, followed by Class 5A and 2A on Friday and Class 6A and 1A on Saturday. The following is a list of the San Antonio area's top contenders for medals.
Class 6A Boys
Christian Dupree, Clemens: Dupree's season best (6-10 1/2 ) in the high jump ranks No. 9 in the state this year. The 6A high jump might be the most competitive event on Saturday with four others with season-bests of at least 6-11.
Joshua McNeil, Johnson: The senior enters with the third-best qualifying distance in the shot put (59-6).
Kaleb Ned, Stevens: The junior finished right behind McNeil in the shot put at regionals with a mark of 59-3 1/4 , the fourth-best qualifying distance.
Cylean Whitley, Clemens: The senior has the third-best qualifying distance in the discus (174-2), his personal best.
Class 6A Girls
Jenesis Cordero, Judson: The senior is a double qualifier in the 200- and 400-meter dashes.
Aryiel Sherman, Reagan: The senior has the second-best qualifying mark in the high jump (5-8).
Class 5A Boys
Michael Ajagbe, Pieper: The senior has emerged as one of the state's top triple jumpers. His leap of 49-10 is the top qualifying distance by more than two feet.
Channon Davis, Wagner: The senior will be in the mix for a medal in the 800 meters with the fourth-best qualifying time (1:52.64).
Jackson Kerth, Kerrville Tivy: The junior enters with the top qualifying distances in the shot put (64-9 1/4 ) and discus (189-1), both personal bests.
Class 5A Girls
Duprasia Beets, Jay: The junior hasn't been challenged in the 400 meters this season. Running against a state-caliber field could improve on her personal best 54.82, which is the fifth-fastest qualifying time.
Shyla Boydstun, Pieper: The sophomore is a double qualifier, including the 100 hurdles, where her time of 13.90 seconds is the third-fastest.
Skylar Carter, Pieper: The freshman has the fourth-best qualifying distance in the triple jump (39-7) and has the fifth-best mark (40-9 3/4 ) in the state this season.
Lilly Koenig, Boerne Champion: The senior is qualified in all three distance events - the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters. She won state silver in the 3,200 and was fourth in the 800 last year. Her personal best in the 1,600 (4:46.58) is the second-fastest in the state this year.
Presley Merkens, Boerne: The freshman has the fastest qualifying time in the 800 (2:12.34).
Sofia Mitschke, Smithson Valley: The junior has the top qualifying mark in the pole vault (13-0). Her personal best (13-1) from the district meet is third-best in the state this season.
Savanah Moya, New Braunfels: The junior has the second-fastest qualifying time in the 800 (2:12.54) and fourth-fastest in the 1,600 (4:59.29).
Class 4A Boys
Kaden Cypert, Floresville: The sophomore is the top qualifier in the 1,600 (4:15.83) by nearly five seconds.
Class 4A Girls
Brady Stickler, Fredericksburg: The freshman's qualifying distance in the discus (137-7) is second-best in the field.
Class 3A Boys
Caden Kitson, Cole: The sophomore has the second-fastest qualifying time in the 800 (1:54.68). He is also in the 1,600.
Carter Pape, Comfort: The senior has the top qualifying distance in the long jump (23-8).
Class 3A Girls
Sidney Ortiz, Poth: The freshman has the top qualifying mark in the high jump (5-6), a personal best.
Peyton Keller, Stockdale: Keller, along with Ortiz and Corpus Christi London's Alana Williams, tied for the top qualifying mark in the high jump (5-6). Keller, a junior, has a season-best clearance of 5-8.
Imani Spencer, Randolph: The sophomore is the fastest qualifier in the 200 (24.23). She is also running legs in the Ro-Hawks' 4x200 and 4x400 relays.
Skye Thompson, Randolph: The freshman is qualified in four events - the triple jump, the 400 meters and the 4x200 and 4x400 relays. She has a personal best of 40-3 3/4 in the triple jump, the only 3A jumper to leap further than 40 feet this season.
Class 2A Boys
Braylon Thompson, Falls City: The senior has the second-fastest qualifying time in the 100 meters (10.63).
Class 2A Girls
Keandra Thompson, Falls City: The senior is a four-event qualifier and is set to compete in the long jump and the 400 meters in addition to the 4x200 and 4x400 relays.
