WNBA GMs would rather have Dallas Wings’ young star than Caitlin Clark
WNBA general mangers did a survey where they picked which player they would most want to start a franchise with and their pick was Dallas Wings reigning Rookie of the Year Paige Bueckers.
Bueckers took the WNBA by storm in her rookie season, averaging 19.2 points per game, 5.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds on her way to earning an All WNBA second-team selection and an all-star selection.
The top choices:
1. Paige Bueckers, Dallas – 33% T-2. Caitlin Clark, Indiana – 20% T-2. A’ja Wilson, Las Vegas – 20% 3. Dominique Malonga, Seattle – 13%
Bueckers placed third, behind Chelsea Gray (73%) and Caitlin Clark (20%), when general mangers were asked who the best point guard in the league was.
Bueckers wasn’t the only Wings player to make an appearance on the survey, with No. 1 overall pick Azzi Fudd being the second-highest vote getter (20%) for Rookie of the Year behind former TCU Horned Frogs star Olivia Miles (73%).
Forward Alanna Smith also made the list tied with Ariel Atkins (21%) for the most underrated addition of the offseason and was tied for second with the Atlanta Dream’s acquisition of Angel Reese (15%) as the most surprising move of the offseason.
Head coach Jose Fernandez was second (14%) to Toronto Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello (71%) when executives were asked which first-year head coach would make the biggest impact.
These sentiments seemed to coalesce with general mangers expecting big things from the Wings this season, with the team being the top selection for most improved team, best offseason moves, most fun to watch and for promising young core.
The Wings will get their first chance to validate these opinions when they face Clark and the Indiana Fever in their season opener at noon Saturday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
