Pieper girls, Alamo Heights' Lee roll to UIL state golf state championships
May 5-GEORGETOWN - Consistency was the key for Pieper as the Warriors shot back-to-back rounds of 298 for a two-round 596 to claim the UIL Class 5A state girls golf team championship by seven shots.
The Warriors had two golfers score under par in Tuesday's final round at Legacy Hills Golf Course en route to winning the program's first title and the school's second state championship. Pieper's boys soccer team claimed the first state championship last month.
Junior Dresden Bounds fired a second-round 69 for a 143 to lead the Warriors. Junior Alessandra Dimas was fifth (146) followed by senior Jules Mahan (15th, 152), junior Madison Fisher (23rd, 155) and sophomore Payton Junek (39th, 161).
"I think it's just really cool that we've put in a lot of hard work," said Bounds, the 2025 Express-News Player of the Year. "It's really impressive, and I'm just really proud of these girls. They played their butts off all week and all year."
Meanwhile, Alamo Heights sophomore Michelle Lee was the only golfer who scored under par for both rounds, going 70-67 for a 137 - a season best for two rounds - to win by six shots.
Lee led the Mules to a third-place finish with a 604, going one shot behind Frisco Reedy, for their sixth straight state podium spot. The Mules won the previous three state championships, finished second in 2022 and won the title in 2021.
"We worked so hard, even though we didn't do as well as we hoped," Lee said. "I know that every single one of them tried their best, and I'm so proud of them."
Bounds tied with Joshua's Kaylee Yuan for second place. Bounds was awarded the individual silver medal after defeating Yuan in a one-hole playoff.
Pieper fired a 298 on Monday and held a three-shot leader over Colleyville Heritage. Alamo Heights sat four shots back in fourth place right behind Reedy.
Bounds and Dimas (71) both went under par on Tuesday. The tournament marked a big send off for Mahan, the team's lone senior who is signed with Murray State.
"It means a lot," said Mahan, who played one season for Pieper after transferring from Alamo Heights. "These girls are just amazing. They are some of my best friends and just being able to end it on a really high note makes it all the more sweet."
Lee was the first-round leader after carding a 70 to hold a one-shot lead over Grapevine's Megan Marais and two shots over five others. On Tuesday, she carded three birdies through the first six holes before bogeying No. 9. Then, she made the turn and scored an eagle on No. 10, sinking about a 30-foot putt. She finished the round with a birdie for a 67.
"My putting was really good these last two days, and my chipping was good today," Lee said. "(On No. 9), I was really disappointed that I bogeyed that hole, especially since I birdied it yesterday. On No. 10, I told myself not to think about it. I had a birdie opportunity and I got an eagle."
Lee is the first individual state champion in Mules head coach Brent McCuiston's career. He is set to retire following this season after coaching golf since 1996 and for the last seven years at Alamo Heights.
