Kentucky Derby 2026 Field Breakdown: Favorites, Longshots and Sleepers

The 2026 Kentucky Derby is almost here, and the field is starting to come into focus. The 152nd Run for the Roses takes place this Saturday at Churchill Downs, with a mix of clear favorites, dangerous mid-range contenders, and longshots hoping to shake up the race.

As always, the Derby is not just about who looks best on paper. Post position, pace, racing style, and late movement in the odds can all change the picture quickly. With that in mind, here is a closer look at the 2026 Kentucky Derby field, including the favorites, sleepers, longshots, and key odds to know before race day.

Kentucky Derby 2026 Odds

Before the race starts, the field has already had a few shake-ups before the horses even reach the gate. Renegade still looks like one of the main names to watch, but this does not feel like a one-horse race.

So Happy, Commandment, Further Ado, and Chief Wallabee are all close enough in the betting to make things interesting, while several bigger-priced runners will try to crash the party at Churchill Downs.

Four horses have also been scratched from the original lineup, with Right to Party, Silent Tactic, The Puma and Fulleffort all out. That has opened the door for Great White, Ocelli, and Robusta to enter the mix. As always with the Derby, the favorites matter, but the longshots cannot be ignored either.

At the time of writing, these are the odds for the horses competing at the 152nd Kentucky Derby.

Favorite to Be Careful With

Renegade may be one of the big names in the field, but he is not without risk. He has the recent wins and the attention, but his running style could make things tricky. As a closer, he may need the race to open up perfectly late.

Why He Could Be Vulnerable

The Derby is chaotic, and traffic is always a problem. Starting from the No. 1 post only adds to the challenge. If Renegade gets stuck inside or has to swing too wide late, he could lose valuable ground.

Sleeper to Watch

Chief Wallabee looks like a more interesting value option. He is not one of the obvious favorites, but he has run well against strong horses and has shown enough speed to be taken seriously.
