Day, Rebels' bats wake up, take must-win game vs. OHS
Legacy's slumping bats got hot at the right time on Thursday night.
The Rebels racked up 17 hits while facing elimination against Odessa High during Game 1 of a District 2-6A baseball series at Ernie Johnson Field.
Sophomore Ty Day went 5-for-5 with two RBI and senior Nick Munt tossed five shutout innings to propel LHS to a 9-3 victory over the Bronchos, which snapped a nine-game losing streak for the Rebels.
The series shifts to Odessa's Pressly Field for a doubleheader at 4:30 p.m. Friday as LHS (15-14-2, 4-9) must win both games to make the playoffs.
The Bronchos (16-13-2, 5-8) can clinch District 2-6A's fourth and final playoff spot with a win in either game as the doubleheader marks the end of the regular season.
"We've been struggling a little bit," Rebels head coach Eric Garcia said. "We've just been talking to the guys about continuing to fight and to fight for each other, just take it one pitch at a time, one inning at a time. We still have everything in front of us that we want, which is to get to the playoffs. It's still there and it's in our own hands. I'm just proud of them for coming out, battling and finding a way to get us to the next game."
LHS was clinging to a 2-0 lead before scoring four runs in the fifth to provide cushion. The Rebels sent nine batters to the plate during the frame, which included RBI singles from Jace Castillo, Day and Brycen Stevens. Luke Wallace also plated a run with a squeeze.
"When we start getting the bats hot, everybody is on," said Day of how hitting can be contagious.
OHS cut its deficit to 6-3 with three two-out runs in the top of the sixth.
The Rebels responded with three runs in the bottom half, which included an RBI single from Day. Luke Galvan began the inning with a double and later scored.
Day has been a pleasant surprise of late for LHS after starting the season on junior varsity.
"Ever since we brought him up, he's all of the sudden one of the better hitters on our team," Garcia said. "The kid, he's got something different. He's fearless up there. Every time I asked him to go up there and get a big hit today, he said, 'yes, sir.' And he went and got it done. I'm super proud of him and super proud of everybody for us to get one more game."
Added Day: "I started on the JV at first. I just put in a lot of work and just grind a lot, now I'm on varsity."
Munt set the tone on the mound as he struck out the first five batters he faced.
Munt held OHS to three hits and four walks, while striking out nine.
"He's done a really good job all year," Garcia said of Munt. "It's been really hard on our pitchers knowing that your offense isn't going to give you many runs the last few weeks. We ask him to go out there and just try to shut it down as best you can, get us five or six (innings)."
Reese King went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two hit-by-pitches; Galvan was 2-for-3 with two runs scored; Foster Cox had a ground-rule double and a run scored; Castillo went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and Hayes Hamm singled, walked, stole a base and scored.
Odessa's Isaiah Ordaz was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk; Martin Alva and Nathaniel Mancha each doubled; and Bo Rodriguez singled, scored and walked.
