Rudy Nerio promoted to become next head football coach at Alamo Heights

Rudy Nerio was appointed to be the next head football coach at Alamo Heights during a special meeting of the Alamo Heights ISD school board Wednesday morning.

Nerio served as the Mules running game coordinator and junior varsity head coach prior to his promotion.

"Being named Alamo Heights head football coach is both a humbling honor and a responsibility I don't take lightly," Nerio said in a news release.

Nerio has been at Alamo Heights since 2021. He has also served as the Mules offensive line coach. Before heading to Alamo Heights, he was at Brandeis, where he held various positions, including offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

Nerio succeeds Ron Rittimann, who announced his retirement last month after coaching the Mules for six seasons. Rittimann led the Mules to a 67-10 record, five district championships and two trips to the state quarterfinals.

Nerio was a standout offensive lineman at Madison, who graduated in 2009. Rittimann was on Jim Streety's staff at Madison while Nerio played there.

Rittimann also served as athletic director. The school district split the roles of head football coach and athletic director into separate jobs. Sean Reno was hired as athletic director three weeks ago.

Nerio is Reno's first high-profile hire.

"Coach Nerio will continue to build our program and maximize opportunities, both on and off the field," Reno said in a news release. "He is committed to continue to build this program as a state power and to develop young men that represent our amazing community in a positive manner."

Nerio inherits a team that went 12-2 and is expected to return four starters on offense and seven on defense.

"This opportunity means more than a title - it's a chance to build a culture rooted in discipline, accountability, and purpose," Nerio said. "I'm grateful for the trust that's been placed in me. I'm driven to serve this program, our players, and the community with integrity and passion."
