Bryan celebrates its seniors in style by bashing Killeen

The Bryan baseball team's seniors reflected on their four years Friday on Senior Night and made a few more memories too as the Vikings rolled to a 9-0 win over Killeen in District 12-6A action at Viking Field.

"It's hard to believe," Bryan senior shortstop Noah Henninger said of it being Senior Night. "I remember freshman year being here and four years definitely flew by but I'm just glad to have an opportunity to play for Bryan High."

The Vikings (10-15, 6-5) scored in every inning but the second. Bryan wasted little time too as the Vikings scored three runs in the first inning, which was the most runs they had in a single inning.

Bryan jumped to that 3-0 lead thanks to a wild pitch, a balk and an RBI single from freshman Dash Garcia. He added an RBI double in the third inning.

Garcia was one of two Vikings with an RBI as senior Colman Henton singled in the fourth inning. Henton, Garcia and Henninger each had two hits.

"I think just staying disciplined cause the pitcher wasn't pounding the zone necessarily, so staying disciplined and getting our pitch and driving the ball," said Henton of what was working at the plate.

The offensive production was a welcome sign as Bryan had been shut out in back-to-back games last Thursday and on Tuesday by defending Class 6A Division I state champ and district champ Waco Midway.

"It felt good [to get the win] after coming back from Midway," Henninger said. "We played good those last two games, and it feels good to get back out here and get a win with the guys."

The three runs in the first were more than enough support for Bryan's pitching staff. Killeen (3-19, 1-9) was held to just two hits by the trio of junior Karson Ramsey, senior Cameron Liotta and Henninger.

"I think just pounding the zone really worked for those guys," Henton said. "Just getting the ball over the plate and letting our defense play behind them."

Ramsey worked the first three innings and walked just one batter with five strikeouts. Liotta worked the next two and gave up a single and struck out four. Henninger slammed the door shut as he gave up a single, hit one batter and struck out five in the final two innings.

Henninger ended the game with a strikeout.

"I think it just helped me reminisce on the fact that I started pitching from a young age and I get to go out there on Senior Night and do it again," Henninger said. "Just anything to help the team man, that's what it's all about."

Up 5-0 after the first three innings, Bryan head coach Justin Garcia started making substitutions to make sure every senior played which was something he was glad to do.

"This group is my first four-year group," the fourth-year head coach said. "I was looking at pictures the other day just seeing them as freshmen and I think it's really cool just seeing them now and how much they've grown and just how much stuff we've been through. I think it's really cool."

The Vikings have 10 seniors. Henton, Henninger, Wyatt Bryan and Felipe Carlos started on Friday and were later joined by Liotta, Jovanny Martinez, Peyton Stone, Giovanni Hernandez, Ezequiel Aquino Rivera and Landen Ramos.

"It was very special you know 'cause we don't always get to play with those guys," Henton said. "So, you know it was very fun to have them all out there and be able to be with all my guys."

Bryan will up wrap district play and the regular season at Killeen at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Vikings are currently in third in district behind Waco Midway and Harker Heights which both already have clinched playoff spots. Behind Bryan is Copperas Cove and Temple which are both at 5-5 with two games to go.

Copperas Cove will be at Midway on Tuesday and then be at Killeen on Friday. Temple will host Harker Heights on Tuesday and then be at Killeen Shoemaker on Friday.
