A&M Consolidated girls soccer season ends in state semifinal loss to Smithson Valley

GEORGETOWN - The defending Class 5A Division I state champion A&M Consolidated girls soccer team returned to Georgetown, but its bid to repeat as titlists ended a round earlier.

The Lady Tigers fell 2-0 to Smithson Valley in a repeat of last year's state semifinals at Birkelbach Field on Friday night.

"We came out a little bit flat," A&M Consolidated head coach Caleb Blakley said. "I think they also came out flat, so we kind of pushed early and had some chances the first five minutes and then we just had an unfortunate goal. But I think the story of the game was Smithson Valley did a good job capitalizing on our mistakes and us not recovering [in] transition to defense and they punished us which is what good teams do."

Smithson Valley (28-0) scored a goal in each half to earn its first trip to the state championship game after previous semifinal appearances in 2023 and 2025.

Consol (19-4-3) was held scoreless for the first time since a 4-0 loss to 5A-II state semifinalist Frisco Wakeland on Jan. 15.

The two goals from the Lady Rangers were tied for the fewest they had all season, however. Smithson Valley's only other game with two goals was a 2-1 win over Boerne in district play on Feb. 24.

The Lady Tigers didn't have many chances to score but the ones they had made both fanbases sweat it out.

After Smithson Valley's Peyton Cox scored with 29 minutes, 43 seconds to go in the first half, Consol nearly netted the equalizer in the final 30 seconds.

Abigail James' free kick 15 yards out nearly found the back of the net. In the ensuing scrum, Anastasia Carr flipped the ball over her head and toward the upper left corner of the net, but Smithson Valley goalkeeper Brianna Lyons knocked it away.

The whistle sounded right after that scoring chance to end the first half.

Consol's best chance in the second half came with 30:19 remaining as a shot from James hit the post and back into play. Jaselynn Coots attempted to head in on the follow, but it just sailed over the net.

Both of those tries would've tied the game, before Smithson Valley senior and Abilene Christian commit Addison Briscoe put her team up 2-0 with 19:32 remaining.

Consol had two would-be goals in the final 5 minutes whistled offside.

"I mean, man, it's a game of inches like our chances were there, they were close," Blakley said. "And I don't know how far offside we were on those two goals, but you go back to last year in overtime, they had two goals hit the crossbar and we ended up beating them in PKs. It's just the way the game goes sometimes."

Consol will graduate eight seniors and four juniors off this year's team. The seniors include Coots, Rylee Carnes, Sarah Carwile, Berkley Poehl, Wake Forest signee Carson Walter, Ava Ravanbakhsh, Anna Kate Johnson and Mia Rosales. The juniors graduating early include Louisiana-Lafayette commit Molly Marino, Tarleton State commit Jolee Ingram, Texas State commit Lanie Junek and East Texas A&M commit James.

The group leaves a large legacy as the Lady Tigers have a state title and a state semifinal appearance over the last two seasons and have won four district titles in a row.

"I'm really proud of them because we're here right now and we have a ring at home because of what they built and the adversity they worked through," Blakley said. "So, I couldn't be more proud, they're a great group of kids.

"We weren't worried about being down two goals because against [Katy] Seven Lakes earlier in the year we were down two goals with five minutes left and tied it up. I don't like that position, but I knew with that core group, especially the seniors, they were going to drive us forward and they did, just fell short, ran out of time like the Aggies say."
