Dallas Wings lose two players in WNBA expansion draft

The WNBA is adding two new teams, the Toronto Tempo and the Portland Fire, this season, and the league held an expansion draft Friday to help fill out their rosters ahead of the upcoming season.

The Dallas Wings lost guard Haley Jones and center Luisa Geiselsöder to the Fire in the draft. Teams were allowed to protect five players on their roster.

Jones was the sixth overall pick in the 2023 WNBA draft by the Atlanta Dream. She spent time playing in Australia and with the Phoenix Mercury last year before signing a hardship contract, and later a contract for the remainder of the season, with the Wings. Jones averaged 8.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 24 games (16 starts) with Dallas last season.

Geiselsöder was the 21st pick in the 2020 draft by the Wings but was cut before training camp. She played with several teams overseas before signing another contract with the team in 2025. She averaged 6.9 points and 4.8 rebounds in 28 games (24 starts) with Dallas last season.

The Wings will get to replenish some of their lost talent with the No. 1 selection in the upcoming WNBA draft, with Spanish center Awa Fam a popular selection to team up with star Paige Bueckers to help turn things around for the franchise.

Dallas finished tied for last in the WNBA last season at 10-34.
