North Texas basketball star makes leap into acting with big role in Apple movie

Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckers, the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year, is making the leap to the silver screen.

Bueckers has been announced as a star of “Jess & Pearl,” an upcoming movie from Apple Original Films.

Bueckers will also serve as an executive producer on the movie, which follows two teammates who are basketball phenoms and friends but are threatened to be torn apart by competition and the cutthroat nature of college athletics.

This will be Bueckers’ first acting role. No other co-stars were announced.

Bueckers averaged 19.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists during a stellar rookie season for the Wings, though they finished tied for last in the WNBA at 10-34.

She will have a new head coach, as South Florida’s Jose Fernandez is taking over for the fired Chris Koclanes.
