Which Fort Worth-area Super Bowl hero was injured during Sunday’s NFL action?

Former Richland High and SMU standout Rashee Rice was injured during Kansas City’s 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Rice, who had emerged as the Chiefs’ leading receiver in his second NFL season, left the game after colliding with quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Rice was helped off the field and then carted to the locker room in the first quarter after a scramble for a fumble during an interception return.

The Chargers’ Kristian Fulton intercepted Mahomes and returned it 29 yards before Rice punched the ball loose. Mahomes collided with Rice’s legs while trying to tackle Fulton. Rice’s one knee appeared to get hyperextended in the melee.

The Chiefs quickly ruled Rice out for the rest of the game.

“It’s not good,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said during a brief interview with CBS at halftime.

Rice did not have a catch in the game. He entered Week 4 leading the team in catches (24) and yards (288). He has two touchdowns on the season.

Rice emerged as one of the top offensive players for the Chiefs, setting franchise rookie marks in receptions (79), receiving yards (938) and touchdowns (seven). He won a Super Bowl ring when the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22, in overtime. He had six catches for 39 yards in the game.

Rice was involved in a six-car crash on March 30 in Dallas that left seven people with injuries, including at least one woman who sustained “serious bodily injury” and another who was stranded on the highway with her 4-year-old son for about five hours after the crash.
