Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. said the games against the Texas Rangers are always special.

Witt, a Colleyville Heritage graduate, was the 2019 Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year during his senior season, when the Panthers won the 5A state championship and played a few playoff games at Globe Life Park (now Choctaw Stadium).

“It’s always amazing getting to play in front of family and friends and the team I grew up rooting for,” he said said Wednesday before the third game of the three-game series.

Witt’s father, Bobby Sr., pitched 11 seasons for the Rangers in the 1980s and 1990s. Witt Jr. said he was excited to return home and play against his favorite childhood team.

“Growing up going to those playoff games, going to those World Series games in 2010, it was really fun to be able to do that, and now I’m playing against them.”

Witt was drafted with the No. 2 selection in the 2019 MLB Draft by the Kansas City Royals. He made the Royals’ Opening Day roster in 2022 and slashed .254/.294/.428 with 20 home runs, 80 RBIs and 30 stolen bases.
