It was a beautiful thing, breaking a 4-4 tie in penalty kicks and sending Dallas onto the Western Conference semifinal match at second-seeded Austin on Sunday.
The two teams played to a 1-1 tie during regulation and the two 15-minute overtimes.
Emanuel Reynoso opened the scoring in the 53rd minute for Minnesota. Bongokuhle Hlongwane was first to a long ball over the defense and he found an open Reynoso at the top of the box for a strike from distance.
Facundo Quignon tied the match in the 64th minute by heading in a corner kick.
The two teams remained tied, forcing the peanlty kicks.
Dallas went a perfect 5-of-5. Minnesota failed on their second kick when Maarten Paes dove to his right to deny Wil Trapp..
Minnesota goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair tied a career-high with eight saves.
Dallas and Austin met twice during the season. Both matches ended in ties (1-1, 2-2).
