Dirk Nowitzki gifted the Dallas Mavericks an NBA Championship in 2011, and now the organization has a present of its own.

The Mavericks announced Friday that a statue honoring Nowitzki will be unveiled at 11 a.m. on Dec. 25 at the American Airlines Center. The Mavericks will host the Los Angeles Lakers at 11:30 a.m. Christmas Day.

“Dirk has done so much for the game and for our city,” said Mavericks owner Mark Cuban in a press release. “And to show our appreciation, we want to ensure his legacy and his jump shot will forever be remembered in Dallas.”

Nowitzki played his entire 21-season career with the Mavericks before he retired in 2019. In his Mavericks tenure, Nowitzki secured 14 NBA All-Star selections, one MVP award in 2007 and a Finals MVP in 2011.

This isn’t the first time the Mavericks have honored Nowitzki. In 2019, the Mavericks remaned a street near the AAC “Nowitzki Way”.

Nowitzki Way will be closed to traffic for the statue ceremony. Fans with tickets to the Christmas Day game are encouraged to come early and watch the ceremony on the video board inside the arena, the organization said.

Doors will open at 10 a.m. The ceremony will be live streamed on the Mavericks website.
