Jim Barnes is a sports editor covering sports with a focus on the Dallas Cowboys for McClatchy. He graduated with a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin, and he joined McClatchy in 2025. He has 25 years of experience in journalism.

He was also previously the sports editor of the Waco Tribune-Herald and a freelance high school sports reporter for the Dallas Morning News.

He is a lifelong Dallas-Fort Worth sports fan who still treasures the Cowboys’ three Super Bowl victories in the 1990s. His favorite sports memory is winning the district championship in football with his Castleberry teammates as a senior and having a photo of him from that game appear in the Star-Telegram.

He is a movie buff who watches about 200 films a year in theaters and a knowledgeable gambler who regularly participates in the World Series of Poker and the major football handicapping contests in Las Vegas, including the Circa Million and the Westgate SuperContest.
