EDITORIAL: It's the last day of early voting. Cast a ballot, reject antisemitism in CD 35.
May 21-When our Editorial Board runs our list of candidate recommendations, we make a point to include some type of statement about how readers should treat our suggestions as a starting point for their own research.
It's our way of recognizing that many readers will see at least some of the candidates and races differently than we do, and we want to honor that diversity of thought and opinion while still offering our recommendations. That holds true on this last day of early voting for the Democratic and Republican primaries. By all means, voters should conduct their own research.
But if there is one race where voters should take our recommendation to heart (while still conducting their own research), it is in the Democratic primary for Texas' 35th Congressional District, which includes the southern and eastern parts of Bexar County.
In that race, we strongly recommend Johnny Garcia, a Bexar County sheriff's deputy.
Garcia is more than qualified to be the Democratic nominee for this newly redrawn congressional seat, which would have favored then-candidate Donald Trump by about 10 percentage points had it existed in 2024. Garcia is well-versed on affordability, healthcare access and other priorities among Democratic voters. He also brings much-needed law enforcement experience to the discussion.
In voting for Garcia on the merits, voters can also roundly reject Maureen Galindo, who has drawn national attention for spewing conspiratorial and antisemitic comments.
For example, in a recent social media post, she wrote that she would draft legislation to "turn Karnes ICE Detention Center into a prison for American Zionists and former ICE officers for human trafficking."
She continues: "It will also be a castration processing center for pedophiles which will probably be most of the Zionists."
Garcia has received endorsements from former Mayor Ron Nirenberg, state Rep. James Talarico, U.S. Rep. Greg Casar, U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, community activist Rosie Castro, North East Bexar County Democrats, Sheriff Javier Salazar, Precinct 1 County Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores and many others.
Voters in Congressional District 35 can send a powerful message by rejecting Galindo's disturbing brand of politics.
The Express-News Editorial Board is independent, nonpartisan and separate from the newsroom. It comprises Josh Brodesky, opinion editor; Tony Quesada, deputy opinion editor; and Cary Clack, editorial writer and columnist. The Editorial Board reports to Publisher Mark Medici.
To arrive at our recommendations, we interviewed many of the candidates, researched their policies and viewpoints, and weighed their relevant experience. As always, we encourage voters to conduct their own research.
Should you miss early voting, Election Day is Tuesday.
