EDITORIAL: We recommend Nathan Johnson in Democratic runoff for Texas attorney general
May 12-In 2018, Democrat Nathan Johnson flipped a Dallas-area Texas Senate seat, defeating Republican Don Huffines.
Since then, Johnson has proven himself as an effective, pragmatic and smart lawmaker, authoring 433 bills and passing 134 into law.
He has a found a way to stand firm on core Democratic Party principles - advocating for Medicaid expansion, protecting and championing voting rights, increasing public education funding - all while working with GOP lawmakers to address pressing issues in his district and our state.
This includes reforms to the Texas health insurance marketplace to increase coverage for some 350,000 people, and maintaining consumer privacy as digital technology and platforms continue to evolve.
In a tight, three-person Democratic primary for attorney general, Johnson earned more than 48% of the vote.
He is now in a runoff against Joe Jaworski, the former mayor of Galveston and grandson of Leon Jaworski, the special prosecutor during the Watergate scandal.
In the Democratic primary, we recommended Tony Box, an Army veteran and a former FBI agent and federal prosecutor.
In this runoff, our recommendation goes to Johnson, who also is an outstanding candidate. He has a physics degree from the University of Arizona and a law degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a mediator and litigator in the Dallas office of Thompson Coburn LLP.
We appreciate Johnson's success and experience in the Texas Senate and see him as a candidate who could bring much-needed focus to the attorney general's office following Ken Paxton's scandal-plagued tenure.
If elected, Johnson said he would focus on rooting out corruption, boosting consumer protection and repelling overreach of the Trump administration.
We see a candidate with a sharp legal mind who is a strong Democrat with crossover appeal in the general election and who, if elected, would work on behalf of all Texans.
