EDITORIAL: Robert Garcia our choice for District 9 seat on Alamo Colleges board

In the race for the District 9 seat on Alamo Colleges District's board of trustees, we recommend challenger Robert Garcia, an energetic and engaging small-business owner whose life story epitomizes what community colleges are about.

After struggling to find his way in high school, to the point of temporarily leaving as a junior, he returned to graduate and enrolled at Northwest Vista College, one of Alamo Colleges' five institutions. There, he earned an associate degree as part of Alamo Colleges' 2+2 program, under which he transferred to the University of Texas at San Antonio. At UTSA, he earned a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's degree in taxation, paving his way to becoming a certified public accountant.

After working for KPMG, and in financial and accounting roles at other companies, he started a CPA firm that works with small businesses. He is on the boards of directors for the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the UT San Antonio Alumni Association.

Given his history with Alamo Colleges, he inherently understands a community college's multiple roles as a gateway to higher education and an agent for workforce development.

His financial acumen can be an asset to the board as Alamo Colleges manages its nearly $1 billion bond, the largest in its history. He hopes to apply his expertise in "supporting our generational investment for our community."

We are enthusiastic about what he can help Alamo Colleges achieve as part of its board.
