If Texas conservatives want to advance agenda, choice for House speaker is obvious | Opinion

As a conservative, I believe in bold, decisive leadership. Texans voted for action on property taxes, border security, and education — not gridlock or compromises that dilute their priorities. I want a Texas House speaker who will unite Republicans and fight for the policies we campaigned on.

Rep. David Cook of Mansfield, the only candidate who has earned the House Republican Caucus’ nomination, is that leader. He will lead the House efficiently and effectively, delivering on conservative policies that will make our state safer and stronger.

In the past, Republican speakers have often relied on Democrats for a majority to gain and hold power, establishing an imbalance in the chamber against the will of Texas voters. Conservative voters need to look no further than how previous House leadership stymied priority legislation on empowering parents with choice in education and ending the practice of taxpayer-funded lobbying to understand the stakes ahead. There’s also the need to ensure we do not have a repeat of the ham-fisted, rushed attempt to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton or other duly-elected Republican leaders.

I want to see a House that empowers Republicans to lead, with committee chairs that reflect our majority, just like in 47 other states. We have a mandate from the voters, and it’s time for the House to honor that mandate: Republican leadership for Republican voters.

I also want to see a Republican caucus that works together. The Texas House has been plagued by infighting, and Cook’s leadership can bring us back together. He has already earned the endorsement of our caucus at a Dec. 7 meeting, despite some members choosing to walk out and team up with Democrats, violating our rules and demonstrating the same divisive mentality that has held us back for so long. It’s time to move forward as a team, focused on delivering for the people of Texas.

I hope for a House that operates with transparency and fairness. Texans deserve to see their representatives debating the issues openly, not working behind closed doors or bending the spirit of our rules to stifle good legislation. I want every member, Republican or Democrat, to have the opportunity to bring forward ideas for their districts under rules that are clear, consistent and fair. Republicans can govern the House without compromising what we believe.

Texas needs a speaker who will listen, collaborate and act with integrity. We deserve a speaker who respects our voices and works tirelessly to fulfill our vision. David Cook offers that leadership, and I believe he is the right choice to guide the House into a stronger, more transparent future.
