Transgender guidelines

We owe a debt of gratitude to Fort Worth school district Superintendent Kent Scribner and attorney Brian Newby for our revised administrative regulation on services for transgender students. By addressing their special needs according to previous federal rules, the needs of all students can be efficiently and effectively met.

This is the route the recent federal guidelines should have followed.

Following the leadership of partisan interest groups cannot bring forth sound policies. That route belongs to our legal system.

Two election evils

In this presidential election, we are clearly faced with a “lesser of two evils” choice.

Trump is arrogant, brash and impolite and does not appear to have a clear game plan. Clinton has experience, but also notable scandals.

We are apparently faced with a party-line vote situation, Republican conservatism or Democratic liberalism. The candidates themselves take a back seat. That’s sad.

Cleveland security

Just sitting here waiting for the apology from Dennis Neighbours of Fort Worth (July 21 letter) regarding his views on sending “our good Fort Worth horse and bike patrols to Cleveland to help with security” at the Republican National Convention.

He felt Fort Worth “is stepping into a big pile of trouble” and would regret going.

Even after Cleveland’s NBA finals win and parade with over 1 million people in attendance, there was no killing, no rioting, no looting, no fighting, no buildings set on fire, barely an arrest or two!

And to top it off “our good bike patrol” returned to Fort Worth with not one, but 12 new mountain bikes as a thank you!

Cleveland has class dignity and class! I'm proud to call it my hometown.

Transit talks

There has been a lot of discussion about the service provided by the Fort Worth Transportation Authority to Richland Hills, including a town hall meeting on July 19.

When I was mayor, the relationship between the city and the transportation authority was cooperative.

The authority helped the city in funding improvements to Handley Ederville Road and Burns Street. It also helped find funding for improvements on three intersections along Baker Boulevard.

The funding was provided over and above the 15 percent rebate of sales tax revenue from Richland Hills.

It seems appropriate that the city and the transportation authority should continue discussions in order to find common ground and a solution that would make both sides satisfied.

David Ragan,

former mayor,

Richland Hills
