All Points: Party conventions
It’s political party convention time, with Republicans assembling in Cleveland and Democrats preparing to gather in Philadelphia.
Thousands of faithful delegates will attend each of the conventions, argue passionately over platform planks, hear speeches from party leaders and name their nominees for president and vice president, all with lots of television news coverage.
With those nominations a foregone conclusion, having been settled in hard-fought state primaries and caucuses between February and June, do the conventions mean anything? What’s important about them?
