Dallas shootings

The chaos and unrest in Dallas were difficult to watch. However, out of the tragedy, we saw kindness and leadership displayed.

Two men of integrity demonstrated compassion and positive leadership, giving us direction when it was most needed. Mayor Mike Rawlings and Police Chief David Brown were strong, positive role models for us all.

I was so impressed by their command of the situation. It was done in a humble manner, but with strength and conviction. Leaders like this can help provide an answer to our divisiveness.

It was so good to see the recognition of the character of these two men in the Star-Telegram.

Well done, Chief Brown and Mayor Rawlings. The eyes of the world saw two good men handling a bad situation in a positive and compassionate, yet strong manner.

As the violence in Dallas brought politicians’ cries for unity, we need to see that hatred against blacks, gays, transgenders, Muslims, or any other group that our lieutenant governor might criticize, is the real problem.

It’s time to get the haters out of the political arena and get back to “come, let us reason together.” And if you’re a wall-building, assault-weapon-carrying hater, you’re part of the problem.

Michael Smith, Fort Worth

The cowardly ambush of Dallas police officers at the end of a peaceful, respectful protest shames us all.

Every thinking, caring person knows that what is most needed now is leadership that moves us together in compassion. Instead we have political leaders who call the marchers “hypocrites,” blame the “rhetoric” and attribute it all to the president’s “constant instigation.”

Rather than helping us embrace each other in love and understanding, these politicians have added to the angst, anger and division. How sad it is that we’ve elected people who would deny humanity for the sake of inciting their base.

“Peaceful protestors” carrying items such as rifles and baseball bats sure sends a conflicting message.

Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, says, “The only thing that will stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”

He’s right, but a whole lot of good guys in downtown Dallas took a bullet in the process.

Can we please sit down and drop barriers to idea exchange on this subject?

Richard Greene

In his July 3 column on the Supreme Court ruling overturning the Texas abortion law, Richard Greene wrote that the court tossed out a law intended “to provide greater protection for women having abortions.”

The majority of the justices thought otherwise. The real purpose of the law was to restrict abortions.

Many of our politicians, such as state Sen. Konni Burton, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Gov. Greg Abbott, seem to agree with Greene.

Can they really think the public is so stupid that they can say with a straight face that the sole purpose of this law was to protect Texas’ women’s health?

Michael Zaunbrecher, Arlington

I continue to be frustrated by the evasions and tone-deafness of Bill and Hillary Clinton.

But what’s even more aggravating is the hyper-partisan and unreasonable attacks on the Clintons, as in Richard Greene’s Sunday column (“Hillary Clinton’s sigh of relief may be short-lived.”)

William M. Brown,
