Greene on Trump; backing Trump
Greene on Trump
When I read Richard Greene’s pathetic attempt to justify supporting Donald Trump, I almost felt sorry for him. (See Sunday column, “Republicans must unify or risk the nation’s future.”)
Greene turned himself into an intellectual pretzel, urging his readers to ignore everything distasteful about Trump and vote for him anyway.
Ignore that Trump wants to deport 12 million people using a “deportation force,” that he wants to ban Muslims from entering the United States, that he advocates torture and murder and has even suggested that he would default on the national debt, oblivious to the economic mayhem such an action would cause.
Ignore all that, says Greene, and vote for Trump anyway because … not Hillary.
That’s it. That’s all Greene has.
His call for unity seems shrill and vacuous, considering that even the man for whom Greene has been a reliable apologist, George W. Bush, has said he will not support Trump.
It must be unnerving to Greene that his old pal “W,” the man who led this country into the disaster that was and is Iraq, refuses to get on the Trump train.
Poor Mr. Greene. His mindless bleating to support Trump, no matter the cost, reduces him to a sad, almost cartoonish figure.

Greene wrote that “Trump needs to understand that his name at the top of the ticket is a challenge for some members of Congress in some parts of the country.”
How about a challenge for most Americans in all parts of the country?
A country where a person’s character depends on honesty, respect, humility, morality — human qualities emphasized in churches, synagogues, mosques, and perhaps in child care centers, K-12 classrooms, homes.

Backing Trump
While Donald Trump’s ideology is uncertain, the Bushes, former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and House Speaker Paul Ryan have demonstrated their lack of allegiance to conservatism through their willingness to allow Hillary Clinton to become president.
