North Texas residents favor transgender guidelines

Dallas ISD teacher Jeannot Boucher voices his concerns to the Fort Worth ISD Board of Education during their open meeting on transgender policy on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, in Fort Worth, Texas. Earlier Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick addressed the media on Fort Worth Superintendent Kent Scribner's policy to allow transgender students comfortable access to bathrooms. Boucher, a former Dallas teacher of the year, said he's been able to work as a transgender man because of nondiscrimination polices that protect him, like this policy protects students. Boucher now mentors others in the transgender community.

Dan Patrick

All you folks who voted for Dan Patrick, you got what you deserve — a total nincompoop.

This is a man who wants to remain relevant and stay in the mainstream news, so he has chosen to bully transgender students in the Fort Worth schools. He must stay up nights thinking of ways to exercise his God-given right to discriminate.

I can only imagine the isolation and mistreatment these young people have already endured from their fellow students and peers. Now our lieutenant governor is leading the charge against them in the name of decency.

What a prince!

Priscilla Keifer, Grapevine

It may be true, as the redneck comedian says, that you can’t fix stupid, but kudos to Superintendent Kent

Scribner for trying.

He has my vote, as well as that of the U.S. Justice Department.

James D. Llewellyn,

Fort Worth

Thanks to the Fort Worth school district for encouraging tolerance in its bathroom policy.

Schools are the right place to teach it so that we don’t end up with too many fear-mongering lieutenant governors.

Remember when the same groups told us that our little boys would be in bathroom danger from gay men? Now the fear is that women will need our protection from transgender citizens.

Dan Patrick can tell us what to fear and then save us from it. How convenient for him.

Tolerance, it’s a good thing to learn early. Thank you, Superintendent Scribner.

Michael Smith, Fort Worth

Has Superintendent Scribner really “placed his own political agenda” ahead of students’ safety, as Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has declared?

Or could Patrick be polishing his own political apple in a nod to conservatives?

Anne M. Sanders,

Fort Worth

I think Dan Patrick should resign, not the Fort Worth school superintendent.

Thousands of children are in real danger in abusive homes while Child Protective Services is in disarray.

Thousands of other children go hungry, and Dan Patrick can get involved only when a tiny number of transgender kids get some protection to go to the bathroom that fits their identity.

Patrick is putting his personal agenda ahead of any real concern for children.

I’m glad that the Fort Worth superintendent is a strong, compassionate, decent human who can stand up to a hateful bully.

Shelly Mathis, Granbury

Hold on, Mr. Superintendent! Your humanity and dedication to the children of the Fort Worth school district is cherished.

However, I’d like to suggest a recall vote of every Republican leader in Austin, starting with Dan Patrick.

Texas doesn’t need religious zealots or conservative hypocrites ushering in a new era of Jim Crow.

Jackie Bell, Fort Worth

Dan Patrick and others like him should be aware that there are others who hope that our collective consciousness evolves eventually to be less bigoted and narrow-minded.

Michael E. Holland,

Fort Worth

When he comes up for re-election, “Potty” Patrick should be flushed.

Gene Riley, Watauga

Patrick is exhibiting “cultural lag”: What was good enough for grandpappy is good enough for me, because we’ve always done it this way.

It’s time to move to the 21st century, where we need to work together and be more accepting of one another’s differences. It makes for a better world.

Thomas Haase, Fort Worth
