Trump and GOP

Seeking logic and rational thinking from politicians is often an exercise in futility!

For example, on the one hand the Republican leadership headed by Sen. Mitch McConnell refuses to consider the president’s nominee for the Supreme Court because, as they put it, “the people” should have an opportunity to express their opinion in the November election.

Of course, this denies the fact that “the people” already spoke when Barack Obama was elected to his second term.

Now comes Donald Trump, leading in pursuit of the GOP presidential nomination as a result of “the people” voting in numerous state primaries, prompting party leaders to pursue multiple strategies to cast him aside!

How is it right to give “the people” the opportunity to weigh in on a Supreme Court nominee but ignore them when they’ve spoken on Trump? They can’t have it both ways!

Abject fear can make strange bedfellows join together to combat terror.

Not against ISIS — against Donald Trump.

The possibility that voters might elect a president not beholden to the donors and elitist leaders is anathema to the “establishment.”

The thought of breaking up the good old boys and girls networks in Washington strikes fear into the hearts of all feeding on government largess.

Bedford Boys Ranch

Like many, I found Bedford Boys Ranch park a quiet, peaceful place where people picnicked, fed the ducks or just walked and then relaxed.

Last year, the city began dredging the lake, and I fear they’ve destroyed an entire ecosystem.

No provisions were made for the ducks. A group of ladies began feeding them and making sure they had water

Now the lake is like a huge swimming pool with concrete walls around it.

There are no fish, and soon there will be baby ducks who cannot get out once they get in. The turtles are having great difficulty getting out. I fear that ducks and turtles will die in great numbers.

It is no longer a quiet nature park.

For this the taxpayers paid $3.2 million!

Election choices

If you’re too lazy to work or too dumb to get an education, Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders is your choice.

Free education is a joke.

Where will the money come from? You will be charged more than 80 percent of your taxable income just to sit on your rear end with pan in hand.

Freedom is not free. Go to a VA hospital and see for yourself.

I was invited to a junior high school memorial in observance of Dec. 7, 1941. Some of the ROTC students had no idea what the date meant.

A.L. McCluney, Hurst

It’s sad to think that Trump and Clinton might be our choices, but sadder still to remember that political candidates don’t just drop out of the sky.

They come from the general population — what our Founding Fathers called “we the people.”

Sunday’s paper gave a striking lesson of what kind of people we’ve become.

The first section lauded a planned $100 million entertainment center across from the Texas Rangers’ ballpark. The second section told of the unfortunate conditions of Child Protective Services, trying to protect the most vulnerable.

We’re willing to spend millions on the sports/entertainment industry. For those trying to protect abused children we offer pitiful salaries and working conditions.

Diane C. Etzel, Fort Worth
