Insensitive letters; The rapture

Insensitive letters

In response to the insensitive letters recently mailed to the two widows of Fort Worth police officers, Rosie and I share the same concerns regarding the company that until recently handled workers’ comp claims for the city of Fort Worth.

CorVel’s insensitivity to the widows and families of Officers Hank Nava and Dwayne Freeto, who were killed in the line of duty nearly 10 years ago, is inexcusable.

How would top executives of CorVel respond if a similar situation happened to their family?

Obviously, this is not a company with high morals and standards, based on CorVel’s recent actions.

Their lack of professionalism is inexcusable in this modern day and age of technology. They should have a reliable computer system to denote the date of an officer’s death.

Both of these dedicated officers died during our term of public service to this city.

At minimum, an apology is owed to the families of these two officers, who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect us.

We continue to appreciate all of the officers and their families for the jobs they do every day.

The rapture

A Texas couple is suing to keep from educating their home-schooled children because they believe that the rapture, as described in Revelation, is imminent and any effort in this regard is pointless (See Nov. 3 news story “Court takes up home-schooling case”).

I’ve lived in Texas all my life and have on occasion listened to a few of my Christian acquaintances pine for the rapture. My biggest concern is not so much with individual families but with leaders and lawmakers who share this worrisome belief.

In April, former U.S. Rep Michele Bachmann of Minnesota publicly proclaimed that the rapture is coming soon. I don’t think that she is operating in a vacuum. Others in positions of authority believe that the apocalypse will happen soon.

In my humble opinion, a belief that the world will end soon is grounds for disqualification from public office.

Why on earth would we elect officials who are not optimistic about and actively planning for our future?
