Greene column

Richard Greene argued in his Sunday column (“Rancor among Republicans is good for democracy”) that President Obama caused the government shutdown in 2013 because he refused to defund Obamacare.

The U.S. is still the only industrialized nation without universal healthcare.

Our healthcare costs are the highest in the world. Our healthcare quality is mediocre at best. And we are the only industrialized nation to force people into bankruptcy over healthcare costs.

And yet the Republicans’ only plan on healthcare reform is to defund Obamacare while never addressing the real problems.

Greene also failed to point out that only a small minority of Republicans see threatening a government shutdown as good governance.

My way or the highway is becoming the mantra of the Republican Party.

Homestead prop

I am confused as to why little is said about Proposition 2, a proposal for an amendment to the Texas Constitution that would extend a homestead exemption to the surviving spouse of a 100 percent or totally disabled veteran who died before the law authorizing a residence homestead exemption for such a veteran took effect.

This law was first passed in 2008. This is a very important issue for veterans and their surviving spouses.

I don’t understand why there isn’t more concern and respect for the men who fought and gave their lives for our country and the families who have to live without them.

JFK in Fort Worth

When president Kennedy came to Fort Worth Nov. 21-22, 1963, a group of band members from Eastern Hills High School played for him at the Hotel Texas.

The Polytechnic High School band played in front of the Tarrant County Courthouse for the president, and they were an amazing band. However, there has been little mention of the Eastern Hills High band.

I was one of the group who played for the president the morning of Nov. 22, 1963.
