Islamophobia; mass shootings; pork in prisons
Islamophobia
The writer of “Islamophobia on the rise in the U.S.” (Thursday) seemed concerned that the media do not mention the religion of non-Muslims in mass shootings.
In many cases, those involved in mass shootings probably did not have a religion in the first place.
Roy Roberts, Irving
Dr. Ahmed wrote well defending Muslims.
But after 3,000 people lost their lives on 9/11, the strongest security possible was put in place. That is most likely the reason the number of radical Islamists killing people is low.
No security system can protect our country from people who have grown up out of step with society. They do not fit any particular profile. They can come from any walk of life and continue to kill for whatever reason.
E.J. Lahaie, Hurst
Mass shootings
Another shooting: Add it to the list — Charleston, Newtown, Aurora, Wedgwood Baptist Church.
What’s it going to take to wake us up?
“Guns don’t kill people. People kill people”? Come on, folks — people with guns kill people.
The ease with which these instruments of death can be obtained makes it certain more deaths will follow. We are the only industrialized country that will give a gun to anyone who asks for one.
Steve Maxwell, Fort Worth
I remember when a close friend committed suicide.
To rationalize it, his family took the position that anyone who committed suicide has mental problems. The truth was, my friend was humiliated by major business failures and couldn’t bear facing his investors. As much as I loved him, he just took the coward’s way out.
The same rationale is being applied to mass shooters: They must be mentally disturbed.
Of course, the National Rifle Association loves this argument. This allows the organization to shift the blame to those “crazy people” and deflect discussion about how easy it is to obtain guns and how manly it is to have one “strapped on.”
Frank Matthews, Fort Worth
I’m not qualified to make a decision about gun laws.
We elect people to do that for us — people who are a lot smarter than I am, with staff and access to as much information as they need.
I have no problem whatever they decide — so long as that decision is made with careful consideration.
I have a big problem with votes being bought or coerced by fear, and that goes for all votes.
Jana Woods, Colleyville
Pork in prisons
They can think up all kinds of excuses for cutting pork from prison menus, but it’s all about appeasing Muslims. Simple as that. (“Inmates, industry decry feds pulling pork from menus,” Wednesday)
Political correctness rules.
