Pope in America
I’m not a Christian, but I suggest that both political parties agree to amend the Constitution to allow Pope Francis to be eligible to become president of the United States.
Maybe, just maybe, he could bring the country together in spite of the differences between the Republicans and Democrats.
He has certainly already shown friendship to immigrants, gays, divorced people and women who have had abortions.
Let’s give it a try!
— Herman I. Morris, Fort Worth
Pope Francis has repeatedly called on us to care for the poor.
The United States has long been a leader in helping mothers and children in poverty.
Over the last 30 years, our efforts and the efforts of the international community have cut child deaths in half. But, according to UNICEF, more than 6 million children under the age of 5 still die every year from largely preventable causes.
We know what it takes to improve child health and survival, but millions die because they lack access to these basic services.
The new, bipartisan Reach Act (S. 1911) will increase access to those services.
We can end the unnecessary deaths of mothers and children by 2035. The Reach Every Mother and Child Act of 2015 will help make this goal a reality.
I call on Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz and Rep. Joe Barton to co-sponsor this important legislation.

When Pope Francis was selected, I wrote on Facebook that he seemed to be from the kind and loving wing of the church, not the mean and vengeful side.
So far, so good.

Treasuring Yogi
America has lost not only another member of the greatest generation but an American treasure.
As I grew up, Yogi Berra was one of my baseball idols. He was one of the reasons I would always wear No. 8.
He was great because he played hard, overcame the odds, had a sense of humor, loved his family, served his country and yet was never full of himself.
I would highly recommend to anyone, especially kids, to read the book When You Come to a Fork in the Road, Take It. It is full of wisdom, not only for baseball, but life.
I’m going to re-read my book. It will be like “deja vu all over again.”
— Jim Hargrove, Fort Worth
