When John Cornyn vilifies any single faith, this Christian is appalled | Opinion
Hate-targeting
I am disturbed and ashamed by the growing number of political ads that seem to target everyone of Islamic faith. Sen. John Cornyn has apparently adopted that cowardly strategy, recently releasing a new campaign ad attacking “radical Islam.” Only 1% of Texans are Muslim.
Since when is it honorable to hate-target an entire group of people knowingly as a means to get reelected? Historically speaking, we should all know better.
I am a Christian , and I will not vote for anyone who is willing to vilify entire groups of people to further a political career.

Charge to rear
Thanks for the story “Texas AG Ken Paxton investigates Grapevine-Colleyville ISD over Islamic Games” by Fousia Abdullahi. (Feb. 1, 2A) The United States is squandering its predominant place in the world, politically and economically. We in Texas are leading this charge to the rear, led by elected officials such as Paxton, who indulge very old human failings such as pride, greed, wrath, envy and lust.

For our future
I voted for Taylor Rehmet in the Texas Senate special election because I’m a retired Fort Worth ISD teacher who attended public schools . My daughter and husband went to FWISD schools. Rehmet, too, supports public schools, in contrast with Gov. Greg Abbott and other Republicans who support private school vouchers.
Using local property taxes to fund public education is flawed. It doesn’t generate enough money to fund it. When the governor does not support public school teachers and students, who will? Who will educate our children? Who will lead our state into the future?
Rehmet will make a difference in the lives of the children of Texas.

Turned off
I follow the Legislature closely. I testified last year in favor of bills to expand Bible reading, prayer and the Ten Commandments in schools. But I was extremely troubled when Texans United for a Conservative Majority PAC ran an ad labeling John Huffman as a “liberal” for stating the simple truth that racism is real.
Even someone like me who has much common cause with Leigh Wambsganss on some issues was turned off by this ad enough to vote for Huffman in the first round of the state Senate special election.
However, I was able to ask Wambsganss about this ad on a live call. She gave a strong, clear and articulate condemnation of all forms of racism and won my strong support in the runoff.

Sick of chaos
The Senate District 9 race was not about blue or red. It was about constituents wanting to be heard and represented.
Perhaps Texans are sick of President Donald Trump’s daily chaos. Perhaps Texans do not want representatives who work for Trump, billionaires and corporations. Perhaps Texans are tired of failing schools. Perhaps Texans want wages that allow them to pay their bills. Perhaps Texans don’t want masked agents terrorizing our cities.
This is not about Democrats or Republicans. This is about the people wanting to be heard.

Paid vacation
I am getting tired of hearing that government employees are working without pay during shutdowns. They are not. They will be paid. It may be delayed, but they will get it. In actuality, they are on a paid vacation courtesy of the taxpayers.
