Kamala Harris’ speechwriter earned kudos, but where has the VP been for 3 1/2 years? | Opinion

All talk, no action in office

Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a well-written speech at the Democratic National Convention. Her speechwriter deserves a bonus, but Harris also did a good job. However, it was too little, too late. What on Earth have she and Joe Biden been doing for the past 3 1/2 years? She is all talk and no action.

Not about a woman’s body

Ryan J. Rusak made many valid points in his commentary about Democrats’ use of the word “freedom” at their convention. (Aug. 24, 4C, “Dems talked about freedom, but they care about only one thing”) I, too, sensed that the most important freedom to Democrats is “reproductive rights.” It sickens me that so many people, mostly Democrats, want to enshrine the right to kill a child in the womb. They make the issue about “a woman’s body” or “reproductive rights” or “women’s health care,” but it’s really about taking innocent human life. This message could not have been made clearer than by the presence of a Planned Parenthood mobile clinic outside the DNC offering free abortion pills and vasectomies.

Freedom for Trump to attack

Ryan J. Rusak fails to address how Donald Trump would define “freedom” in a second administration. With a Supreme Court ruling in Trump’s pocket, there’s great potential for attacks on freedom of speech, political protest, journalists’ rights, activist organizations, women’s health care and political opponents, to name a few.

In the fight for good reason

“Freedom” was an excellent theme for the Democrats. But if the only freedoms they were asking for were for a woman to make choices about her body, LGBT folks to control their lives, and all of us to decide whom we marry and love and what books we read, than they absolutely picked the right fight.

Harris nothing but a mirage

God bless Ryan Rusak for a cogent rebuttal to the travesty we are witnessing. Vice President Kamala Harris is a mirage, a creation of PR and promotion. She is an empty vessel through which the Democratic Party can control our lives. We are Americans, but as the Texas variety, we believe in the rights of individuals to conduct our lives as we see fit, not as government sees fit. The last four years have been a window to the destruction the elites can bring on us. Thank you for the column.

RFK Jr. a true statesman

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s endorsement of Donald Trump is strange, considering that Kennedy and his extended family have always aligned themselves with the Democratic Party. (Aug. 25, 9A, “Onstage in Arizona, Trump and Kennedy signal new alliance”) But RFK Jr. is an extraordinarily well-informed, thoughtful and intelligent man whom the Democrats have thrown under the bus.

My take is that he is positioning himself for a Cabinet office, preferably secretary of state, a job for which he is eminently qualified. Trump would do well to not overlook him.

Slow down and sober up

There seems to be a marked increase in automobile accidents with multiple fatalities. I can think of three in the last 10 days. There is too much speeding and driving while intoxicated. Slow down and quit driving so fast and drunk, Texas.
