While Texas lawmakers focus on drag shows, they ignore real threats to kids | Opinion
Texas legislators are attempting to pass laws that will restrict some drag shows as a “safety” measure for children. Meanwhile, the leading causes of death for children in Texas are accidents, gun violence, suicide and drug overdose.
Legislators waste our tax dollars attempting to codify religion-based morality that mocks the separation of church and state. Even when they do focus on real safety issues, they seem to miss the bigger point. While there is much talk about school security, just this week a child was killed outside an Arlington school. “Hardening” schools to be more secure is useless without addressing the root causes of violence. The Legislature ignores that.
No children’s injuries or deaths have been associated with drag shows. When will legislators check their religious affiliations at the door and pass meaningful laws that focus on real issues and that will keep us safe, secure and prosperous?
