Flag on the Fourth
Each morning as I read the news, I pretty much conclude that I live in a screwed-up country. Not so on July 4.
I turned the pages to see a beautiful photo of a little boy in a cowboy hat holding his American flag, with a message from Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. Thanks to them for this touching tribute.
So touching, in fact, that I had to fight back tears when a few pages on there was a full-page message from Central Market with a photo of a little boy with a fabulous missing-tooth grin looking over his dad’s shoulder, holding onto an American flag.
And thanks to Central Market for displaying a giant American flag across the front of the store at Hulen Street and Interstate 30.
Somehow, with patriotism like this, I feel we’re all going to be OK.
— Lorna Parker, Benbrook
I have a beef about the flag. No, not that flag — the American flag.
As I drove around on the Fourth of July, I saw very few. Pitiful.
Every day at Fort Hood we train soldiers to go to places where an enemy wants you to go home in a box.
So how about spending a few bucks and proudly displaying the Stars and Stripes on the next holiday?
— Sgt. 1st Class Fred Gregory,
Arlington
It was so uplifting to see the Stars and Stripes flying high.
Americans are proud of their flag. And, yes, atrocities have been committed. The road to “a more perfect union” has not been easy and may continue to be difficult.
Nevertheless, Americans understand that they have the ability and responsibility to continue the journey toward that goal.
That goal is what the Stars and Stripes represents. And that is why it is the only national flag that merits flying high all over the country.
Flags that represent evil, bigotry and racism do not merit any proximity to the only flag that truly represents all Americans.
— Bob Montanez, White Settlement
Look at Greece
Anyone who ever wondered what Margaret Thatcher meant when she said the problem with socialists is they eventually run out of other people’s money should look no further than Greece.
— Michael Sexton, Fort Worth
Honest politician
Donald Trump is a bombastic, egotistical bomb-thrower who has a slightly better chance of winning the Republican nomination for president than I do.
He couldn’t care less about political correctness or sugar-coating the truth about any number of subjects.
When he talked about people coming from Mexico, the part about drug dealers, murderers and rapists coming was the absolute truth.
As an example, look at the man from Mexico who murdered a young woman in San Francisco July 1, and this was after he had already been deported five times!
I only wish that all the professional politicians were as honest in their thoughts and opinions as The Donald.
— Dave Waldrop, Hurst
What they say
Democrats say: “You can’t do that because I know what’s good for you.”
Republicans say: “You can’t do that because I don’t like to do it.”
— Delmar H. Dolbier, Fort Worth
