It isn’t the ’60s anymore. We don’t need your condescension about student debt, boomer
Cost of college isn’t history
Another letter from someone who says he paid his own way to get a college degree in 1975. (Sept. 8, 9A) Heck, I did it in 1963 with the aid of scholarships. Even the governor touts his hard work and debt-free education. That was then.
But today, how much does it cost to get a degree? Can’t believe we’ve raised a generation of slackers and freeloaders? You should have heard what the oldsters said about us.
Someone should do a deep dive and report back with the facts about the real costs of higher education now versus then. I suspect Tarrant County Judge Glen Whitley is onto something when he says the state isn’t paying its fair share for educating its young.

Would it have cost more otherwise?
The Star-Telegram reported Sept. 8 that it has cost Texas $12 million to bus migrants to other cities. (2A, “Busing migrants to sanctuary cities has cost state $12M”) But the paper failed to report how much Texas saved in the cost of dealing with the migrants had they not been bused.

We need another kind of sign
“Welcome, Sonny” signs abound as TCU’s new football coach, Sonny Dykes, begins his work.
What if Angelica Ramsey is hired as Fort Worth ISD superintendent? Surely, someone trusted to help provide superior education for the children of Fort Worth deserves as much attention as TCU’s football coach.
Could she be greeted by the community as she arrives? What about signs stating “Welcome, Dr. Ramsey” or “Welcome, Angelica”? Could someone volunteer to design and market welcoming signs?

Democrats, you need to step up
In all the talk about presidential election outcomes in 2016 and 2020, I never see mention of one of the reasons Donald Trump got so many votes. Many of Trump’s voters were not in support of him but rather in opposition to Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden.
If the Democrats could submit better candidates, they would probably get more votes.

Do what you must for democracy
I’m not sure if post-Trump America is fixable. The antidemocratic, autocrat-embracing, election-denying, conspiracy-believing MAGA members of the Republican Party is not going away.
But we can push them back to the far-right fringes of society where they belong in two months.
Can you hold your nose and vote for the Democrats this November? It’s the only way that I can see to save us.

Queen Elizabeth’s death snubbed
One of the most beloved, longest-serving and influential leaders in the world died Sept. 8. The first six pages of the Star-Telegram’s Sept. 9 edition asked if the Dallas Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy has the hardest coaching job in America, and Queen Elizabeth II gets part of Page 9A. (“Britons mourn death of queen after 70 years on throne”) You must be joking.
As for the “toughest coaching job,” that title goes to school coaches who have to nurture and develop kids as they mature and try to turn them into something other than the prima donnas whom McCarthy coaches.
