The Ku Klux Klan: Is its hatred all in the past, or is it still a lesson for today?

The KKK is pure history to me

Thanks, Bud Kennedy, for your “delightful” Easter memories, “In 1922, Easter in Fort Worth was about Jesus and the KKK.” (April 17, 1C) Real nice memory for us as we worship this week.

What was your point? That as Christians living here we should feel guilty for long-past misguided professed Christians? Or are you misguided enough to think there’s still a link?

It was a ridiculous column, but expected from you.

The Klan’s hatred spreads wide

Bud Kennedy’s column focused on the fact that not so long ago, the bigots of the Ku Klux Klan masked themselves under a guise of religion and supposed compassion. In reality, the group was an oppressor of not only African Americans, Jews and Catholics, but also poor whites.

My late father grew up on a rural Kansas farm, and although his family was Protestant and untouched by bigots, my dad recalled seeing a cross ablaze on the distant horizon. A homestead of a poor white farmer was burned to the ground. My dad never joined the Klan despite having classmates who obviously were members. He taught me that Christian virtues advocate peace and tolerance, not bigotry and unprovoked violence.

Politicians could actually work for us

Sometimes I think it must be nice to not be a critical thinker. There are such problems that local politicians could work to ameliorate, but Republicans prefer to manufacture crisis after crisis, all at election time.

They complain in an online moms group, but I can’t find baby formula anywhere. It’s the Republican governor who is intentionally stopping food delivery trucks from coming into the state. Home prices are through the roof. Other countries have enacted laws to prevent corporations from buying houses for profit. Do we do that here? Of course not.

The government could help get products back on our shelves, reduce gas prices and lower home prices. Stop letting yourselves be lied to. Stop this insanity. Demand accountability from your politicians.

Quit splitting us into groups

Regarding efforts to exclude individual Russians from competitions such as the Van Cliburn: Stop blaming all members of a group for the actions of a few or because they are not members of your group or do not look like you. For example, all foreigners, all Jews, all Christians, all Black people, all white people, all women, all men, all LGBTQ people or all straight people. Focus on rational facts about individuals.

Is the world planning ahead?

The CIA director said last week that the U.S. intelligence community knew in November that Russian President Vladimir Putin was planning a major invasion of Ukraine. If that is true, and considering what had already taken place in Crimea, I’m wondering why our national leadership didn’t immediately help Ukraine by establishing air superiority over the nation and rallying a coalition of western allies to rush a massive military presence on the ground to deter or counter the invasion.

Which eastern European country will be next? I trust the U.S. and Western allies are moving now to bolster forces in Taiwan to prevent or counter an attack by China.
