Just 16% of Tarrant County’s voters turned out. Wonder why our leaders are pitiful?
‘Ridiculous’ doesn’t go far enough
I agree with Bud Kennedy that the Republican primary election was “ridiculous.” I would also add “pitiful.” (March 3, 11A, “This Texas election was ridiculous. So were some results. Now, on to Bush vs. Paxton”)
Only 16% of registered voters in Tarrant County bothered to vote. No wonder we wind up with incompetent government officials. A guy who was indicted on felony securities fraud charges was the top vote-getter for attorney general.
The only way we can make change is to vote.

A better way to collect trash
Why did Fort Worth not use Saturdays to pick up trash during the ice storms in February? Even if workers didn’t pick up all the trash those weeks, they could have minimized the number of people who had to go two weeks between pickups. Both times, those with Thursday pickups were thrown under the bus. In each ice storm week, Friday and Saturday would have been OK for picking up trash.
The week of the second storm, at least three area cities — Bedford, Grapevine and Carrollton — picked up Thursday’s trash on Friday and Friday’s on Saturday. Why couldn’t Fort Worth do the same?

No payday for ex-presidents
In his March 1 column, “The White House is a path to obscene riches for ex-presidents,” (9A) Nicholas Goldberg was correct in pointing out how former presidents have cashed in obscenely on the office — presidents of both political parties since Ulysses Grant, but particularly in recent years.
Oh, for the likes of Harry Truman. When offered payment for various endorsements or jobs, he declined, stating, “I could never lend myself to any transaction, however respectable, that would commercialize on the prestige and the dignity of the office of the presidency.”
Ex-presidents are afforded lifetime pensions, no charge for Secret Service protection, office rent and $1 million annually for travel. Here’s an idea for ex-presidents who cash in: No pension, and they pay for the aforementioned expenses.

Let’s define ‘abuse,’ shall we?
Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton have determined that parents who obtain medical care for their transgender children are guilty of child abuse. But, why stop there?
Don’t they know there are atheist parents who teach their children that God doesn’t exist, and there are Jews and Muslims who teach their children that Jesus was not the Messiah? Would it not be in the best interest of those kids for the state to take those children and place them with good Christian foster families?
Don’t they also know that some adults allow their kids to read books many people want to ban, such as George Orwell’s “1984”? Isn’t exposing children to radical ideas child abuse, too?
Actually, reading “1984” could lead one to conclude that Abbott and Paxton are the ones guilty of abuse — of the English language.

Unmarked planes could end this fast
Here’s a suggestion: Remove the national markings from NATO airplanes (or even put Ukrainian markings on them) and send them into Ukraine to gain and maintain air superiority, take out the 40-mile-long Russian military convoy and neutralize the invasion.
I’m guessing an ample number of pilots would be willing. I’m also guessing Russian President Vladimir Putin would do nothing about it but withdraw.
