Worried about speeding on Fort Worth highways? Traffic patrols are missing in action
Speeding, reckless driving everywhere
Where are the traffic patrols? Not in Fort Worth. (Jan. 11, 1A, “These areas inside I-820 loop had most crashes last year”)
It is ridiculous that people drive 90 mph on our freeways, weaving in and out of traffic and never signaling. Now, drivers are simply ignoring yield and stop signs.
Our roads are littered with abandoned tires, construction materials and trash to the point that many are no longer safe. To see what I’m talking about, just drive around Interstate 820 or sit in an unmarked car at Wendy’s at Trail Lake Drive and Interstate 20.
How can we expect big businesses to move their headquarters to a dirty, unsafe city?

Not a voice we need to hear now
Really, a guest column by Betsy DeVos? (Jan. 29, 6A, “Texas, are you really going to let Florida beat you so badly on this key education reform?”)
Ask almost any teacher his or her opinion of the former secretary of education. She was part of the defeated former president’s cabal. What’s next, an opinion piece by Rudy Giuliani or Donald Trump Jr.?

Movie’s plot was true to its time
Recently, the Star-Telegram published a review by Katie Walsh of Tribune News Service of the movie “Redeeming Love.” (Jan. 20, 8B, “‘Redeeming Love’ yields little in cinematic riches”) A reviewer should critique poor acting, amateurish cinematography or other aspects that sabotage a film. However, Walsh’s primary objection seemed to be that she wanted this film to have a different plot. She apparently thinks that what she calls a “tradwife” film is cynical and patriarchal.
However, Walsh’s worst error is either refusing to research or willfully ignoring this movie as an updated retelling of the story of Hosea in the Bible. Women of that time, as well as the 1850s, had few options for pursuing autonomy, as Walsh snidely recommended.
Walsh’s opinion that the only way people can be redeemed is by their “own self-love” helped make this a sad, savage review.

Banning books like this is dangerous
Libraries have policies and procedures for book challenges. When someone wants an item removed, a committee is formed so the person can explain why the item is offensive or inappropriate. It is expected that the complainant has read the item.
Pulling a list of books from the internet and demanding their removal is not appropriate. It was shocking to see crates of books being removed from libraries recently with no procedures followed. Books can be deemed inappropriate for certain age levels, but there’s a process.
What a great danger when one person can decide for all who gets to read what.

Biden is setting himself up
It seems President Joe Biden will have the chance to make good on one of his campaign promises. With the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, he is looking to fill the vacant seat with a Black woman.
The last time Biden went looking for someone based on gender and race, we wound up with Kamala Harris as vice president. Apparently, Biden didn’t learn much from that decision.
Didn’t we just honor a man who dreamed that we would one day judge people by the content of their character and not the color of their skin? Seems we have a long way to go.
