TCU leaders showed they have zero class with how they handled Gary Patterson’s exit

That’s classless, TCU leaders

Athletic director Jeremiah Donati and wealthy alumni showed how absolutely disloyal TCU leaders can be. Why not wait a few weeks to replace football coach Gary Patterson when the season ended? I’m guessing someone was showing off after having too many drinks at the Kansas State game.

The Star-Telegram Editorial Board wrote a fitting piece Tuesday, although with an unflattering photo of Patterson. (7A, “Coach Gary Patterson was good for all of Fort Worth, not just TCU. He deserved better”) The suggested mea culpa event could never make up for the worst timing in TCU football history.

What promising coach would want to work for a “Christian” university led by a Judas?

Patterson did the right things

Thank you, coach Gary Patterson, for the many years of great football you brought to this city during your time at TCU. You did not deserve this latest episode. You deserved an opportunity to gracefully exit your job on your terms.

Your bosses’ efforts to take that from you sorely backfired because you were smart enough to see through their offer to stay the rest of the season, which was not only an insult but a feeble attempt to cover their actions.

I did not always agree with your coaching style and decisions on the field, but I could never argue or disagree with your fierce commitment to Fort Worth, TCU and the young men whom you made better because you never let them settle for anything less than their best.

Who’s going to fill these jobs?

President Joe Biden continues to push his multitrillion-dollar plan to create jobs for Americans who appear to have no desire to go back to work after the pandemic. Its giveaways will discourage working for a living.

I guess Biden expects those crossing the border illegally to step up. There better be a lot of engineers, ironworkers, masons, electricians and plumbers among those looking for a better life.

Cruz, Cornyn not looking out for us

While the news has been focused on Democrats’ efforts to improve the lives of Americans by approving a large infrastructure plan and many of the provisions in the Build Back Better bill, Republicans have just been standing back and opposing everything.

Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn don’t know how to improve the lives of Texans. They only vote to cut taxes on the rich. Anything that would actually help working people leaves both of them dazed and confused.

Children shouldn’t be underestimated

State Rep. Matt Krause wants to study more than 800 books in Texas public schools. (Oct. 31, 1A, “Book probe is ‘just gathering information,’ Krause says”) I would like to tell him about a few books I read in public school in the 1970s.

“Elmer Gantry” by Sinclair Lewis taught me to distrust charlatans. “Oliver Twist” by Charles Dickens taught me empathy and compassion for poor and unwanted children. “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain taught me the value of a friendship between a white boy and a black man. “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee taught me about injustice in this country.

I checked out those books from my school library. We should think long and hard about banning books in our public schools. It would be a very dangerous road to go down.

Our kids are much smarter than we give them credit for.
