Climate change; water wells
Climate change
I am so happy to hear the likes of presidential candidate Jeb Bush, talk show host Michael Savage and many right-wing intellectuals admonishing Pope Francis for speaking out about a huge moral failing that has most likely injured our planet permanently.
They point out the dangers of mixing religion and politics.
Hear, hear!
I look forward to hearing them also admonish the Falwells, Robertsons, Grahams and Osteens, and any ridiculous politician promoting the Bible as a science textbook.
It’s important to keep it fair and balanced.
— Greg S. Pate, Fort Worth
In the 16th century, the pope, the Roman Catholic Church and all the scientists of the day agreed that Earth was stationary and that the sun revolved around it.
When Nicholaus Copernicus advanced his theory of heliocentrism, which said that the sun was stationary and Earth and the then-known planets revolved around it, he was condemned as a buffoon and a denier of Scripture.
In the 17th century, when Galileo Galilei published support of Copernicus’ theory of heliocentrism, he was tried by the Inquisition, told to recant his support of the theory and spent the last nine years of his life under house arrest.
Today, anyone who questions the extant dogma on climate change is condemned as a denier of settled science and depicted as a buffoon. Will the next step be a new Inquisition?
Anyone who has ever seriously studied science knows that science is never settled. Those who deny this fact are either not scientists or charlatans.
— Richard H. Smith, Rhome
Water wells
I appreciate that the study finding contaminated water wells included a peer review and did not directly implicate the oil and gas industry. (“Study of water wells find contaminants,” Thursday)
However, one important point was omitted.
What control groups did the study use to validate the conclusions and inferences?
— Barry Stevens, Arlington
