TCU’s Gary Patterson wrongly got all the blame in N-word controversy
Trump didn’t fail on COVID-19
I find your Aug. 1 editorial cartoon extremely offensive. (6A) The cartoon sickly leans toward blaming President Donald Trump for the coronavirus deaths in our country.
Might I suggest a cartoon of Beijing and Chinese President Xi Jinping instead?
The Star-Telegram has been offending its subscriber base with your editorials and smarmy cartoons for years.

I see no racism here
Drs. Joseph Guinn and Michael Brooks, well-regarded physicians in their own right, take issue with the annual Gold-Headed Cane Award selection process of the Tarrant County Medical Society membership, claiming systemic racism. (Aug. 2, 1A, “Failure to honor Black doctors draws criticism”)
Yes, it is a popularity contest, but one based on selection of not only a good physician but one who might represent superstar status within his or her field and who goes above and beyond with active leadership participation in local or state organizations.
It’s not systemic racism just because you’re not chosen.

We can’t trust the post office
Here’s why mail-in ballots won’t work. I sent a birthday card to my 92-year-old aunt, who lives in a Richardson memory-care facility, by certified mail on July 13. As of Aug. 1, it still hadn’t arrived. The postmaster says it might be because of COVID-19.
If certified mail can’t make it from Bedford to Richardson in two weeks, we are in a lot of trouble.
I always vote early. Voting in person makes sure your vote is counted.

The people want term limits
Stop it, Arlington elites. We’re sick and tired of the arrogance that only a few can lead this city. Term limits is a popular, bipartisan issue. The citizens spoke in November 2018. (Aug. 4, 9A, “Arlington political elites trying to undo term limits vote”)

Spend now or pay more later
Millions of Texans are renters. At least 20% of them weren’t able to pay rent this month. We must provide emergency rental assistance now.
Congress and the administration must include $100 billion in the COVID-19 relief bill under consideration if we are to prevent millions of Texans from being evicted and many ending up homeless.

Blame the TCU students, too
The front page of Tuesday’s sports section was dominated by an attack on TCU football coach Gary Patterson for repeating the N-word, but you minimized the contribution of the player. (“Patterson allegedly repeats racial slur used by player,” “TCU’s Patterson must know to avoid N-word”)
The coach was condemned and forced to apologize, while the Star-Telegram did not call on the player to apologize for causing the fiasco. TCU would be justified in canceling the scholarships of players who used this as an excuse to skip practice.
