How can passengers be safe from COVID-19 on American Airlines planes?
Biden divides? How ridiculous
How can a letter writer in Tuesday’s paper say that Joe Biden is the cause of division in the United States? (9A)
President Donald Trump, not Biden, has been the divider. He continues to lie to Americans about the seriousness of the pandemic. The loss of more than 135,000 Americans is serious, and a real leader would have listened to the experts on his science team and followed their advice.
He is completely out of control.

Bicyclists have responsibilities
The lengthy article last Sunday “Thinking about riding a bike? Here’s how to get started” omitted a crucial point: the importance of obeying traffic laws when riding on our streets. (1D)
Bicyclists routinely disregard stop signs, creating hazards for themselves and others. A fast-moving bicycle is more difficult to spot because it is so much smaller than an automobile or truck.
There is no justification for bicyclists not stopping at stop signs and signals, just like other vehicles are required to do.

COVID-19 rates not Trump’s fault
Columnist Eugene Robinson assigns 100% of the responsibility for America’s failure to fight COVID-19 successfully to President Donald Trump because he, Robinson says, failed to dictate what each citizen must do regarding the pandemic. (July 7, 9A, “History will blame Trump for coronavirus catastrophe”) Robinson has also condemned Trump as a totalitarian monster on other matters. Which is it?
States have the power to decide matters of health and safety. Mayors and governors across the country have properly exercised their authority in these matters — some in defiance of Trump’s policies. That is how it should be.

Passengers’ safety not first
Several airlines, including Fort Worth-based American Airlines, recently announced they are filling middle seats and returning to full capacity on planes.
As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, why are planes allowed to pack passengers inches apart for multiple hours, while restaurants are asked to go to 50% capacity and bars are forced to close? The risk is even greater on airplanes, because the virus can potentially be spread to passengers who then go into communities across the country.
American Airlines got $5.8 billion from taxpayers as part of the federal Payroll Support Program. It can afford to go to 50% capacity to help stop the spread of the virus.

Admit things had been good
I have to wonder what magical powers or crystal ball Leonard Pitts Jr. has that he can foresee how the president would react if he loses the election. (July 8, 11A, “America faces difficult days, no matter election result”)
Pitts says, let’s imagine. Why not think about how great our economy was before COVID-19? Tax reforms, low unemployment, a soaring stock market and more.
You might not like the man, but most people prospered in the last 3 1/2 years.
